The Method・ジャイロキネシス®とは

“The ultimate aim is to be at home in one’s body, to be at one with the nature of oneself, and to experience exercise as a creative and delightful experience.”
– Juliu Horvath, GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® founder

GYROKINESIS® exercises were developed in the 70s by Juliu Horvath, a Romanian-born dancer, as a form of rehabilitation for injuries sustained during his career. He founded White Cloud Studio in New York City to teach others his technique, originally known as “Yoga for Dancers,” and word eventually spread beyond the dance community.

How it works

The GYROKINESIS® methodology incorporates principles from Kundalini yoga, ballet, gymnastics, swimming and tai-chi, and works the entire body through natural spinal movements. Its rhythmic, undulating exercises systematically and gently work the joints and muscles, and stimulate the internal organs.

Fluidity is the key.  Postures are not held for long periods but are harmoniously connected through the use of breath, making exercises feel more like dance and swimming than traditional yoga.

What to expect

Class begins with an energizing self-massage to awaken the body. Next, the spine is mobilized through a series of arching, curling, bending, twisting and spiraling movements. These same movement patterns are expanded to release the hip, knee, hamstring, quadriceps, and so on. Many of the exercises are performed while sitting on low stools. There are also floor and standing sequences.
